Our Academics

Here is a brief summary of what we are currently working on throughout the day!

Language Arts

In ELA students are working in small reading groups with a teacher. In these groups students are working on specific reading skills while reading short stories and novels. There are 2 rotations that take place. During independent time students have the choice to work on reading, writing and word study. Students switch their independent activity each time we rotate.

Students are given word study words every two weeks. Students have a set of these words in class, in which they work with each day. Additionally a list of the words are sent home in their Tuesday folders so that they can practice them at home. They have a test on these words at the end of the two weeks.

Every other Monday students are working on specific grammar skills, which are then incorporated into class throughout the week.

Writing

In writing we are using the writers workshop program to guide instruction. We are currently finishing up our unit on expository writing. Students chose a science or social studies related topic to research and then wrote about it. We are now starting our next writing unit on functional writing.

Mathematics

3rd Grade

In math we are using the Investigations program. We currently finishing up the unit on fractions and probability. Students are learning about fractions, how to add and subtract them, and how to write them in mixed numbers. Students are also relating fractions to probability. Students are learning how they can connect fractions and probability to real life.

Social Studies

In Social Studies are working on our economic unit. Students are learning about types of resources, consumers & producers, wants & needs, and opportunity cost. Third graders will be connecting these concepts to the Ancient Civilizations and fourth graders will be connecting these terms to Jamestown.

Science

In science we just finished up our unit on ecosystems. Now the third graders are learning about simple machines. They are learning about what they are, how they work and getting a chance to build their own. The fourth graders are learning about electricity, how to circuits work and how to build them.
